Phagwara, 9 August 2026: The Punjab Football Association (PFA) is all set to kick off the 40th edition of the Punjab State Super Football League (PSL) on Monday, 10 August 2026, with two opening fixtures scheduled to mark the start of the new season.
In the opening-day action, Sher-e-Punjab Sports Club will host Kehar Sporting Club at Shampura, Ropar, while defending champions Punjab FC will begin their title defence against newly promoted GHG Khalsa College FC at the Punjab FC Sports Complex in Mohali.
The 2026 edition will feature eight teams, with the league being played on a double-leg league basis. Under the format, each team will face the other seven teams twice, once at home and once away, providing every side with a substantial opportunity to compete for the coveted state title.
Punjab FC enter the competition as the defending champions after a strong campaign in the previous edition. Their title defence, however, is expected to face stiff competition from an experienced field, with Sher-e-Punjab among the teams looking to challenge for the title.
The league will also see GHG Khalsa College FC competing in the top division after earning promotion. Their opening fixture against the defending champions will provide an early test of the promoted side and add further interest to the opening round.
Two familiar teams, Punjab Police and BSF FC, will be absent from this year's competition as the necessary permissions for their participation were not granted by their respective departments. Their absence has reduced the number of participating teams but has opened up an opportunity for the other clubs to play a greater role in the title race.
Speaking about the preparations for the new season, PFA Secretary General Mr. Harjinder Singh said that eight teams will compete in the league this year and expressed confidence that the competition will provide a strong platform for players and clubs to showcase their talent.
The Punjab State Super Football League remains an important competition in the state's football calendar, providing a competitive platform for established clubs as well as emerging players. The league also plays an important role in strengthening the domestic football structure in Punjab and creating opportunities for players to progress to higher levels of the game.
With the defending champions beginning their campaign at home and two competitive fixtures scheduled for the opening day, football followers across Punjab can look forward to an exciting start to the 40th edition of the PSL.
